Alberts, Dr. Don, Rebels On the Rio Grande: The Civil War Journal of A. B. Peticolas, University of New Mexico Press, 1985 ISBN 0-8263-0766-3 This is the diary of Alfred E. Peticolas, 5th Sgt. of Co. C, 4th Texas Mounted Volunteers.

Hall, Martin H., Sibley's New Mexico Campaign. A good overall work on the campaign. Some recent research has cast some doubt on a few of Hall's hypothesis, but this is still a very valuable piece of reference.
Hall, Martin H., The Confederate Armv of New Mexico. This is a roster and cursory service record of the brigade. It contains a wealth of information about the men, but very little on the campaign itself.
Hollieter, Ovando, Boldly They Rode. Hollister was a private soldier in the Colorado Volunteers, and offers a very biased diary. Later in life, Hollister recanted as propaganda some of what he had written.
Giesecke, Julius, His Diary. Giesecke was a Lt in Co. G of the 4th regiment. Co G was almost entirely composed of Dutch and German immigrants. He was a very well educated man, as were most of the soldiers in his company.
Nichhols, James L., The Confederate Quartermaster in the Trans-Mississippi. A very enlightening look at where the western Confederate Army got its provisions and uniforms. Specific reference to Sibley's Brigade is rare, but usable generalities abound.
Noel, Theophilus, Campaign From Santa Fe To the Mississippi. Noel was the Sgt-Maj of the 4th regiment. Another diarist with an acid wit. He offers many perceptive comments on the adventure. Ironically, he offers almost nothing on the battles in New Mexico because he was in the hospital with measles and pneumonia during the battles of Val Verde and Glorieta.
Taylor, John, Bloody Valverde,: a Civil War Battle on the Rio Grande: February 21, 1862, Albuquerque, University of New Mexico Press, 1995, ISBN 0-8263-1632-8 Excellent description of Valverde
Thompson, Jerry, Westward the Texans: The Civil War Journal of Private William Randolf Howell, El Paso, Texas Western Press,1990, ISBN 87404-211-9
Whitford, Willian, The Colorado Volunteers in the Civil War. Whitford wrote this book after conversations with veterans of the campaign. He offers the Federal vantage point, but his book is not unduly slanted or prejudiced.
The Official Record of the War of the Rebellion has many reports and memorandums from New Mexico and Texas during l861 and 1862.
Glory Glorieta is not on our recommended list as it is too revisionist
