NEW MEXICO CIVIL WAR LADIES' LEAGUE

The Ladies League was formed ten years ago in order to give women a voice of their own. we are a strong, authentic group and wanted more than to be just "nice to look at". Instead we want to provide an active presentation of the women's and civilian side of the Civil War.

We have members of all ages. Our members have been in this hobby from 1 month to 15 years. Although most of the members do belong to a military unit of their choice, the Ladies League is a separate unit and is not an auxiliary to another unit. Being a distinct and separate unit the league is a member of the New Mexico Civil War Commerative Congress with a voice and a vote.

We meet monthly and exchange ideas, information, plan activities and events. We are always looking for new information and ideas to maintain our authenticity and increase our rolls of choice. The Ladies League has seriously studied etequite of the Civil War period. A portion of this is available and will be continuously updated. We often have guest speakers.

The League hosts two or three social events a year with the emphasis on everyday life of the woman during the Civil War in the western territories. The eastern and western women differed substantially in clothes, manner, work ,rolls and in general lifestyles.Finding these differences is often a challenge.

The activities of the League are designed to represent the type of activities that the women of the period would participate in during that time. This extends to not only the ball but to the Christmas Caroling, various vignettes of camp life such as laundresses, seamstesses, officers wives, suttlers, and other related activities.
