Field Gun Skirmish Drill - Dec. 1998



GUNNER

TAKE EQUIPMENTS:

1. Put on hearing protection, put on gunners pouch

2. Take trail handspike from #4 and key into pointing rings

3. See that gun is cleared for action and that crew is at POST

LOAD: Check safety zone

2. - Open the haversack and inspect round brought up by #5. Close immediately after inspection. (Note: The haversack is to be open only the absolute minimum amount of time necessary for the inspection. The best coordination signal for the inspection is the pung of the sponge for the look into the haversack.)

4. When #4 is set, step clear, make sure all crew members are at their post, raise arm to signal that gun is ready

FIRE: Insure that safety zone is clear and that crew members are at their posts, drop arm, when piece fires, insure that #5 has started timer. P0ST

D0 NOT ADVANCE, THE PRIMER HAS FAILED Insure that #5 has started the timer

REPRIME

DEPRIME THE PIECE:



POSITION NUMBER ONE

TAKE EQUIPMENTS:

1. Put on hearing protection and gloves

2. Remove tampion

3. Take sponge-rammer in the right hand, aided by #3, POST

LOAD: Face left, step oblique with right foot, sponge vertical, (sponge head up)

2. Plant left foot below muzzle, sponge inclined across body to left

3. Plant right foot a shoulder's width from left foot in line with bore, grasp sponge with left hand, sponge horizontal, hands spread, right hand palm down, left palm up, sponge head against edge of muzzle face. Keep thumbs toward the sponge at all times.

4. When #2's sponge has cleared the bore, insert sponge to breach face.



SPONGE: Twist the staff three turns against breech face.

2. Withdraw sponge smartly with both hands, rest sponge against muzzle face

3. Flip sponge over (sponge up), extend hands, tap muzzle with rammer head

4. Scoop charge from hands of #2 into muzzle with rammer head, rest rammer head in muzzle, right hand palm up with thumb below sponge staff, Left hand by side.

RAM : When #2 is clear, make eye contact with gunner. left arm reaching toward left trunnion, ram charge. DO NOT PUT THUMB AROUND RAMMER STAFF! When charge is home, drop right hand down below muzzle face, count to ten with GUNNER.

2. Slide sponge-rammer out with right hand, catch staff with left hand. Keep sponge. horizontal and hold away from the bore line. Catch balance by briefly catching rammer head on the muzzle face.

3. Bring sponge to vertical, sponge up, drop left hand and beginning with the right foot take three steps backwards to the POST position facing the piece

READY: Eyes on muzzle, cringe. (The "cringe" position is assumed by stepping back at a 45 deg. angle with the right foot remaining in place. Look over right shoulder toward the muzzle preferably keeping the wheel between the muzzle and the face. The staff is held at a 45 deg. angle with the sponge pointing over the left shoulder.)

FIRE: After piece has fired, come to attention facing the piece.



D0 NOT ADVANCE THE PRIMER HAS FAILED: Step to wheel. Set rammer head on top of wheel hub, staff vertical. Return to cringe at "READY".



DE-PRIME THE PIECE: Step to wheel, set rammer head on top of wheel hub, staff vertical. Return to cringe at "READY".

POSITION NUMBER TWO

TAKE EQUIPMENT:

1. Put on hearing protection and gloves

2. Unhook sponge bucket, set below muzzle see that it has water

3. Remove sponge-worm from carriage aided by 4,3, wet sponge head, if needed, POST with worm in left hand, sponge up, palm down

LOAD: Face right, step oblique with left foot, bring worm to vertical with sponge up

2. Plant right foot below muzzle and bring implement to port arms, That is, rotate left hand to palm up, sponge inclined across the body to left with right hand supporting the worm end of the staff, worm pointing towards breech Keep thumbs toward the sponge at all times.

3. Plant left foot in line with bore a shoulder's width from left foot, grasp worm end with right hand, palm down, worm against muzzle face

4. When the vent is stopped, insert worm to breach face

WORM: Twist worm three turns in proper direction. withdraw worm (if residue comes out, re-worm), catch staff with right hand, hold worm far enough above the muzzle for GUNNER's inspection. Keep thumbs toward the sponge at all times.

2. Hands together, flip worm over (sponge up), hands extended, insert sponge, push sponge to end of chamber.

3. Twist sponge three turns, withdraw sponge smartly with both hands, rest sponge against muzzle. left palm down. right palm up.

4. Hands together, flip worm (sponge up). rest worm in implement hook or over axle tree.

SPONGE: Right about face

2. Note: the round absolutely should not come out of the haversack until #1 taps.

3. Open the haversack of #5 and remove charge following the double tap of #1.

4. Left about face., charge in left hand. place right hand on chase before bringing charge in contact with muzzle. Support charge so #1 can scoop it into muzzle

RAM: Take up worm in left hand, sponge up. Step backward three steps leading with left foot to POST position facing piece

READY: With eyes on muzzle, cringe (step back at a 45 deg angle with right foot with left foot remaining in place. Look over left shoulder toward the muzzle preferably keeping the wheel between the muzzle and the face. The staff is held at a 45 deg. angle with the sponge pointing over the right shoulder.)

FIRE: After piece has fired, come to attention facing the piece

DO NOT ADVANCE, THE PRIMER HAS FAILED:

RE-PRIME: Rest worm against wheel (sponge up), keeping back toward muzzle. Slide around wheel to axle. Remove spent primer backhanded. Take priming-wire from #3 over piece. Keeping clear of vent, prick charge. Hand priming wire back to #3. Take primer attached to lanyard from #4 over wheel. Re-prime and trap lanyard. Hand Lanyard back to #4. Make eye contact with #4. Hold lanyard until #4 is set and nods. Back step to POST position. Retrieve worm. Check safety zones. Call "READY" if clear. Return to cringe.

DE-PRIME THE PIECE: Uncringe.

POSITION NUMBER THREE

TAKE EQUIPMENTS

1. Put on hearing protection

2. Put on tube pouch, priming wire and thumb stall.

3. Un-key implement chains aid #1 and #2 in removing implements

LOAD: Take vent brush in right hand, step left to breech

2. Brush vent

3. Secure vent brush.

4. Stop vent

3. POST About face and go to trail spike and aid gunner in aiming. Return to post at GUNNER's signal

READY: Step left to breech, take priming wire in right hand, prick charge.

2. Secure priming wire, trap lanyard against breech after #4 inserts primer.

3. Make eye contact with #4 and hold the lanyard until #4 has backed out and signals with a head nod. POST

DO NOT ADVANCE, THE PRIMER HAS FAILED:

RE-PRIME: Step to wheel, keeping clear of hub. Hand priming wire to #2 over wheel avoiding vent area. Take priming wire back from #2.

DE-PRIME THE PIECE: Step left to breech. When #4 removes primer, stop vent



POSITION NUMBER FOUR



TAKE EQUIPMENTS:

1. Put on hearing protection

2. Put on tube pouch

3. Remove trail hand spike and hand to GUNNER

LOAD: - Face the piece.

SPONGE:

RAM: -

2. Take primer tube in left hand, lanyard in right hand with lanyard leading between the middle fingers.

3. Grasp primer by twisted wire. hook lanyard to primer

READY: -

2. Step forward to breech if necessary. Insert priming tube in vent.

3. Drop lanyard handle letting cord drop between fingers but still retaining it. Make eye contact with #3., step backward leading with left foot until lanyard handle is drawn up into hand. When set, nod head to #3, watch the GUNNER after #3 has returned to post.

FIRE: When GUNNER drops hand, turn face away from piece, pull lanyard. (Lanyard is pulled by placing hand on the thigh with most the slack out of the cord. By turning away from the piece and pulling the primer should fire. DO NOT FACE THE PIECE WHEN FIRING!) POST. Rewind lanyard in St. Andrews knot.

DO NOT ADVANCE, THE PRIMER HAS FAILED:

RE-PRIME: Hook primer to lanyard. step to wheel keeping clear of hub. Hand primer, lanyard, and handle over wheel to #2. When #2 has re-primed and captured the lanyard. take lanyard back. Make eye contact with #2. step back as in READY. Nod to #2 when set.

DE-PRIME THE PIECE: Step forward, remove primer from vent, keep primer in left hand, POST



POSITION NUMBER FIVE

TAKE EQUIPMENTS:

1. Put on hearing protection, put on haversack, strap over left shoulder, bag on right hip

2. POST

LOAD: About face. walk to ammo chest.

3. - Hold haversack open for #6 who places the charge inside haversack with powder end facing to the front. (The bag oriented fore and aft on the right side of the #5.)

4. - Secure haversack

WORM: Advance to trail spike, one yard to left (POST position)

SPONGE: Advance to left of GUNNER.

2. At the GUNNER's signal open haversack for inspection. On the GUNNER'S signal. close haversack and advance to front of left wheel

3. Open haversack to allow #2 to remove charge but only after the #1 taps the muzzle twice to signal he is ready and the #2 is ready to remove the charge. Otherwise the haversack must remain closed.

4. About face, step to the POST position one yard behind and one yard to left of trail handspike, about face.

FIRE: When gun fires, start timer. Inform the GUNNER when three minutes have passed.

DO NOT ADVANCE, THE PRIMER HAS FAILED: Start timer. Inform the GUNNER when three minutes have passed. Fetch any tools needed to clear the misfire as requested by the GUNNER.

RE-PRIME: (Note: in the event that a charge fails to clear after three primers or the cartridge is not under the vent on the GUNNERS orders #5 goes to the ammunition box and brings back the water and syringe)

DE-PRIME THE PIECE: -

POSITION NUMBER SIX

TAKE EQUIPMENTS:

1. Put on hearing protection

2. Make sure 25 ft. safety zone is clear (no smokers or spectators)

3. Make sure ammo box is unlocked and contains charges

LOAD: -

2. - Check that #5 has a clear haversack. Check to make sure that no guns on the line are ready to fire.

3. - Open the ammo box take a fresh charge out of ammo box and close lid, place charge in haversack of #5, powder end of charge facing to the front (The bag oriented fore and aft on the right side of the #5.)

4. - Make sure ammo box is closed and secure. An ammunition chest is never to be opened after the order READY is given
